Pacific Repertory Theatre (PacRep) will hold auditions for its 2025 production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable on Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 1 PM to 4 PM. Auditions will be held in the Founders Theatre at the Golden Bough Playhouse, Monte Verde Street between 8th & 9th Avenues in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea.

• Performers must have local housing. We do not have housing available for out-of-town performers.
• We are seeking two groups of performers: children aged 10–16, and older performers aged 17+.
• Audition sessions will be limited to timed appointments.
• All auditioners should present one song excerpt and one monologue, within a 3-minute total time limit.
• Songs can be from the show or another of a similar style. Instrumental tracks only - no vocal tracks, please.
• Monologues must be memorized, not read aloud.
• Auditioners must provide their own electronic accompaniment (iPad, cell phone, etc.) and speaker, if needed.
• Auditioners should also bring a recent headshot and a current resume, if available.

Gypsy: A Musical Fable is a musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. It is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, and focuses on her mother, Mama Rose, whose name has become synonymous with "the ultimate show business mother." It follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life. The character of Louise is based on Lee, and the character of June is based on Lee's sister, the actress June Havoc.
The musical contains many songs which became standards, including "Everything's Coming Up Roses", "Rose's Turn", "Small World", "Together (Wherever We Go)", "You Gotta Get a Gimmick", and "Let Me Entertain You".
Gypsy is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of the mid-twentieth century's conventional musical theatre art form, often called the book musical. Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers, among them Ben Brantley, who said “it may be the greatest of all American musicals...", and Frank Rich. Rich wrote, "Gypsy is nothing if not Broadway's own brassy, unlikely answer to King Lear." Theater critic Clive Barnes wrote that "Gypsy is one of the best of musicals..." and described Mama Rose as "one of the few truly complex characters in the American musical."
Gypsy will be directed by Nina Capriola, with Choreography by Joe Niesen and Vocal Direction by Desma Johnson. Rehearsals will begin September 29. Performances are slated for November 13 through December 21, 2025, in the Founders Theatre at the Golden Bough Playhouse in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea.
